To qualify at the GS-9 level, candidates must either have one cumulative year of specialized experience (this can include paid and unpaid internships, volunteer experiences, student organizations, and jobs) or an advanced degree (e.g. masters, PhD) in a technology field

Applicants to the data science & analytics track have additional education criteria: candidates must have a:

  • Degree (at least at the baccalaureate level) in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study that is appropriate for the position, or
  • Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.

Specialized experience: You qualify at the Grade 09 level if you possess one year of specialized experience that equips you with the skills needed to perform the job duties. This specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the Grade 07 level to meet the qualification requirements in the Federal Service. Examples include experience that demonstrates the ability to gather and process data for analysis using scripting methods; perform statistical analysis and modeling to pull meaningful insights; develop applied data science projects and approaches; communicate technical information—including information about the data science process—in ways that different types of audiences can understand; and utilize technical knowledge and methods to solve problems.
